Athian to Market Localized Dairy Carbon Credits through New Registry with Climate Action Reserve
Registry-certified credits are expected to reach buyers, including technology companies seeking geography-linked climate investments, beginning in 2027.
WILMINGTON, N.C. [Sept. 21, 2026] — Athian, Inc., the technology platform that measures, verifies and monetizes greenhouse gas reductions for the livestock supply chain, today announced its plan to work with the Climate Action Reserve (CAR) to deliver localized, registry-certified dairy carbon credits targeting methane and nitrous oxide reductions beginning in 2027. Athian and CAR, which is one of the longest-standing offset registries for both voluntary and compliance markets, plan to incorporate Athian's alternative manure management practices protocol (AMMP) into an updated CAR Livestock Protocol.
AMMP quantifies reductions in methane and nitrous oxide from on-farm practices such as alternative manure treatment and storage, solid-liquid separation and pasture-based management. Both of these greenhouse gases (GHGs) are considered climate “superpollutants.” Methane, for example, is short lived compared to CO2 but has roughly 80 times more warming potential over a 20-year period. That means methane reductions today produce an outsized near-term climate benefit. Nitrous oxide, due to its potency and lengthy atmospheric lifespan, has roughly 265 times more warming potential than CO2 over a 100-year period.
“Methane and nitrous oxide are two of the most important GHG emissions we can address, and incentivizing manure management practices is one of the fastest, most tangible ways to cut them,” said Paul Myer, Athian Founder and CEO. “I’m looking forward to realizing the additional positive change we can support by connecting America’s dairy farmers with a broader universe of potential credit buyers for their AMMP practices.”
To date, AMMP-based reductions have been available only as insets, which are emissions reductions retained inside a food company's own supply chain. Certification under CAR's protocol would allow AMMP-based reductions to also be issued as registered, tradable credits, opening them to buyers that require registry-certified credits. Potential buyers would include those, like technology and data center companies, seeking local, verifiable climate benefits tied to the communities where they operate.
AMMP practices are uniquely suited investments for localized impact because they carry benefits that extend beyond the GHG ledger. Improved manure storage and solid-liquid separation, for example, reduce nutrient runoff, supporting local water quality and conservation. In addition, capturing and managing manure-based emissions lowers ammonia, which impacts regional air quality; and land-applied manure can help rebuild soil organic matter and microbial diversity on participating farms.
“Climate Action Reserve is exploring this work with Athian because it reflects the kind of rigorous, multi-stakeholder process that has always defined our protocol development,” said Robin Rix, President, Climate Action Reserve. “We intend to apply that same standard — technical review by an independent expert workgroup, broad stakeholder input and an open public comment period — as we evaluate incorporating Athian’s AMMP methodology into an updated Livestock Protocol. That process is what helps give the carbon market confidence in the integrity of credits.”
CAR will lead protocol development, including the technical workgroup, public consultation and final determination ofprotocol requirements. Athian will contribute technical and implementation expertise, on-the-ground data and input into protocol drafts. Athian expects that, subject to CAR's adoption of the updated Livestock Protocol, registry-certified AMMP credits will become available for sale to buyers beginning in 2027.
“This registry pathway is what turns years of Athian’s on-farm data collection experience into credits any buyer can trust,” said Myer. “It also gives our country’s farms and ranches a way to generate additional revenue streams and improve economic resiliency that are not available to them today.”
Since delivering its first claims in 2023, Athian has generated more than 650,000 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent in reductions for buyers, representing more than $27 million inpayments to local dairy farms. No protocol has been adopted and no credits are available for delivery as of the date of this release. Statements in this release regarding future protocol adoption, credit availability and anticipated timing are forward-looking, and remain subject to CAR's independent technical review, stakeholder consultation and public comment process, and validation and verification of Athian's livestock superpollutant mitigation projects.

About Athian
Athian was founded in 2022 to help the livestock value chain capture and claim greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions by aggregating, verifying and certifying them, and then monetizing those reductions for farmers through the sale of the resulting insets. Athian's platform is a secure software tool that simplifies data entry, upload, measurement and verification at scale, resulting in high-quality and credible GHG emission reductions that help satisfy Scope 3 goals and fund livestock producer sustainability measures. Athian provides a way for leading food brands to not only invest in climate and sustainability initiatives but also to mitigate enterprise risk by supporting the financial and environmental resilience of the farms in their supply chains.
